The Chiang Mai Disabled Center

“Freedom” Wheelchair Workshop was founded in order to:

  1. Provide free mobility aids to needy disabled families living in rural and remote areas of northern Thailand (including ethnic minorities and refugees from Burma).
  2. Design mobility aids around individual needs rather than force users to adapt to the device or chair.
  3. Teach disabled persons how to make their own mobility aids as well as develop self esteem and professional disabled employment.
  4. Provide wheelchair maintenance and repair for our own products as well as to provide repair service to others.
  5. Provide home-visit mobility training, physical therapy, and health education to the families of disabled persons living in rural and remote areas.
  6. Provide self-help published information in Thai to people with mobility problems.

8 year old free wheelchair recipient Suknipaa, a Lisu minority child from rural Mai Ai, Thailand poses with her father, our workshop Manager, and members of our technical staff.

Physical therapy provided free by our staff for all
of our wheelchair recipients.

Currently we:

  1. Employ a workshop staff of 5 disabled persons plus our own disabled physical therapist.
  2. Produce individually sized walkers; wheeled walkers; standard wheelchairs; 3-wheel all terrain wheelchairs; cerebral palsy “buggies” for children; CP wheeled-walkers; amputee skateboards; stand-up work stations for children with CP; padded security harnesses; wheelchair cushions; wheelchair tables; ramps; and special needs chairs.
  3. Provide professional home care visits to disabled families all over rural north Thailand.
  4. Provide free maintenance service for the mobility products we make.
  5. Do not sell our products. We give them away free to families in need.
  6. Remain the publishers of Thailand’s only “Wheelchair User Manual”.
  7. Innovate and design mobility aids using low tech, locally available materials.
